I'm all for freedom of speech, religion, gay rights, straight rights, any right that protects the freedom of the human being. But when someone says derogatory things about someone else's beliefs, your freedom of speech just got torn to shreds. This person that I'm talking about makes repeated references to how believing in an organzied religion is stupid, meaningless, etc. That may be true, for him. But believe it or not there are people who need organized religion in their lives. It gives them a meaning, a purpose to live, if you will.

Said person consistently states that he only believes in what he can see. To him, everything is explained by science. Fine, science is a fact of life. I like science. But how does he explain the emotions that rage through someone when they fall in love, or the sadness felt at the loss of someone special, or joy at the birth of a baby or the achievements of a friend? By not acknowledging the something spiritual he limits himself. He limits his ability to see the beauty in the unexplainable.

Religion and spirituality are two separate things. You don't have to be religious to be spiritual. Spirituality has nothing to do with what church you go to or which god you believe in. Spirituality is all about you. It's about your ability to take a look around you and say "wow, how amazing is this life!"

Maybe you don't believe in God, or Yahweh or Buddha or any other god. Maybe you believe that your mother's broom is the creator of the universe. Awesome. But never, ever cut down someone else for their beliefs.

I'm trying to give the kid the benefit of the doubt. He's young. He's naive and he's not very well imformed as far as I can tell. So his misconceptions, while completely short-sighted and well, just mean, can be forgiven. I just hope that he learns how to express his beliefs in a way that doesn't make him look like a jerk.

Love,
Supersteph
